ABOUT IGA ORIBE

Iga Oribe ceramics are a traditional Japanese pottery style known for their rugged, earthy appearance and distinctive aesthetic. This style originates from the Iga region in Mie Prefecture, which has a long history of ceramic production dating back to the late 16th century. Named after Furuta Oribe, a prominent tea master and samurai, Iga Oribe ceramics were heavily influenced by the wabi-sabi aesthetic, emphasizing simplicity, imperfection, and the natural beauty of materials.

A key characteristic of Iga Oribe ceramics is a natural ash glaze that creates a greenish or brownish tint. This effect is achieved through the wood-fired kiln process, where the ash settles on the pottery, fusing with the surface and forming a natural glaze. The clay used in Iga Oribe pottery contains a significant amount of iron, giving the ceramics a rich, earthy texture. The firing process is often done in traditional anagama (tunnel) kilns which mean the glazing on each piece has a unique appearance.
