SKLO rice is produced on a small family farm outside Kanazawa in Ishikawa Prefecture, Japan. The 'Kuromai' black rice variety gets its purple hue from anthocyanins, an antioxidant and it is also high in Vitamin E and iron. It is used in small quantities to add nutrients to white or brown rice and when cooked with other rice, it turns the rice into a light purple colour.
Only organic fertilizer is used to cultivate SKLO rice and no agricultural chemicals are used.
To cook the rice, add one tablespoon of Kuromai rice per one cup of short or long grain rice, and cook as usual.
The business owner, Yoshiki Tsukamoto, produces Kuromai with his family on their small family farm, and he also designs light bulbs, while running the shop SKLO in Kanazawa, specialising in antiques.
