Mini Ohitsu
This compact ohitsu is made from trusted sawara wood (Japanese cypress), sourced from the Kiso region, an area long known for its exceptional timber. Each piece is assembled and finished by hand using traditional joinery, giving it the quiet refinement associated with classic Japanese kitchenware.
Traditional and contemporary Japanese kitchens use ohitsu as an everyday tool to be used after rice finished steaming. Cooked rice is immediately transferred into the ohitsu to store it but also to bring it to its best eating condition. The wood gently draws away excess moisture, allowing the grains to settle, breathe and remain beautifully separate.
Dimensions
The mini ohitsu is ideal for one to two persons.
- Outer dimensions: approx. φ14.5 × H9.5cm
- Inner height: approx. 6cm
- Weight: approx. 285g
- Capacity: 2 - 2.5 cups of cooked rice (equivalent to 1 cup of uncooked rice)

Ohitsu can be used to store cooked rice overnight outside of a fridge, to ensure it maintains its texture, moisture and taste. It is especially handy to keep leftover fresh fresh in order to make onigiri the next day. The straight, even grain of the wood and the warm sheen of the copper bands create a simple and dignified presence.
Sawara has been used for centuries in kitchen tools such as rice tubs and hangiri. It is light, durable and naturally suited for food preparation thanks to a number of distinguishing properties:
- Moisture regulation
- Light yet strong construction
- Gentle aroma
- Antimicrobial properties
- Beautiful appearance
- Long cultural history
Care Instructions
- Rinse with lukewarm water after use, wipe dry and allow to air-dry completely in the shade.
- Store in a cool place.
- As with all untreated wood, a small amount of natural resin (yani) may occasionally appear, especially when exposed to high temperatures. This is harmless and can be wiped away.
