Sencha - Danran (Tea with Friends)

Chaya Suzuwa

Only left in stock

Sencha (green tea) from Shizuoka Prefecture in Japan. Using traditional gogumi blending techniques, this is a specially formulated blend of tea leaves from the regions of Tenryu, Haruno, Tamagawa, Ryuzume and Makinohara.

The name of the blend is "Danran - (団欒)" which translates as sitting together in a happy circle. The concept and the blend is therefore that of "tea time" - a time to experience tea drinking with friends and others. The package illustrations references the animal characters found in the Chōjū-jinbutsu-giga - a famous 12th to 13th century series of picture scrolls depicting various scenes featuring animal and human characters.

As the tea maker says: "What we want to sell is not tea leaves, but tea time. I hope you have a good time with this tea."

  • Ingredients: Green tea
  • Volume: 50g

  1. Add 1 teaspoon (approximately 5g) of tea leaves into a teapot
  2. Pour about 150ml of  hot water (70-90 °C) into the teapot (Use water that have been filtered with Kishu binchotan, or if tap water was used, let it boil for more than 5 minutes for better flavour)
  3. Cover the teapot and wait for 60 seconds
  4. Pour the tea into a tea cup and enjoy.

When it is brewed at low temperature, you can enjoy an added umami taste and when brewed at high temperature the aroma is stronger. It is possible to make a second brew, by brewing the same tea leaves for 90 - 120 seconds.

Chaya Suzuwa was established in 1848 in Shizuoka, the capital of one of the main tea producing regions of Japan. It has been blending and selling teas for more than 170 years and is committed to traditional selection and blending techniques. They emphasize that green tea drinking is an experience that combines aroma, taste, aftertaste, colour, freshness and flavour.
