Incense Holder - Celadon with Iron Brushwork
A hand-thrown stoneware incense bowl by Bianca Bernstein, made in Cape Town for use with Japanese stick incense. It forms part of our Inspired by WA, made in ZA collection of South African made goods inspired by Japan.
This incense holder has been thrown and turned on a potter's wheel, and then glazed in Celadon - a centuries-old iron-based glaze. Before reduction-firing this pot, iron oxide brushwork is delicately added to accentuate its form.
Please note: The image is illustrative. Each piece carries its own character - the depth of the colours, the exact shapes of iron brushwork, and the surface texture will vary slightly from piece to piece.
- Made by: Bianca Bernstein at Bernstein Pottery, Cape Town, South Africa
- Material: Stoneware, celadon and iron oxide brushwork, reduction-fired
- Technique: Wheel-thrown
- Use: Japanese stick incense - direct placement or ash method

Bianca Bernstein is a potter specialising in functional forms that are largely inspired by the anglo-oriental tradition and other South African potters who also work/worked in the tradition. She works primarily at her potter's wheel, and fires her work to high stoneware temperatures in reduction (using a manual gas kiln) to achieve specific glaze and brushwork finishes.
