Japanese incense sticks with a sandalwood fragrance, made with binchotan charcoal. Low smoke, low odour. Made in Japan.

Sandalwood - byakudan (白檀) in Japanese - has been used in Japanese incense since Buddhism arrived in Japan in the 6th century. It is one of the two classical fragrant woods at the heart of the Japanese incense tradition, alongside aloeswood. The scent is warm, woody, and gently sweet - grounding rather than sweet, calming rather than sharp.

The addition of binchotan charcoal - the dense, ultra-pure charcoal produced from ubame oak in Wakayama Prefecture - reduces smoke and neutralises odour during burning, making these sticks well suited to indoor use. Binchotan is the same material used in Japanese water filtration and is valued for its purity and absorptive properties. The result is a cleaner burn than conventional incense, with the fragrance of the sandalwood coming through without the heaviness of smoke.
