Only left in stock

Set of twelve small Japanese candles made from 100% rice bran wax.

Kome-no-Megumi means the blessing of rice. Rice has been the staple food of Japan since antiquity, and these small candles are made entirely from rice bran wax - a natural byproduct of the rice milling process that burns cleanly with almost no smoke.

Takazawa Candle intends the Kome-no-Megumi as a candle for everyday use - a small ritual rather than a grand occasion. Each candle burns for thirty minutes, long enough for a cup of tea, a short meditation, or a quiet moment at the end of the day.

Takazawa Candle has been making plant-based candles, such as from the fruits of the sumac tree, rice bran, and rapeseed flower oil, since 1892. The company was part of a bustling trade during the Edo period in the harbour town of Nanao, and to this day continues to make candles by hand, focusing on traditional techniques.

The flames of Takazawa candles burn bigger and brighter than those of other candles. This is due to a special wick the company makes from a unique recipe dating back to the 16th century, when it was important to make a candle burn as bright as possible. The wick is also made from plant-based materials such as dried rush and washi-paper.

Daiyo was established in Takashima County, Shiga Prefecture in 1914, and the craft of candle-making has been passed down across four generations. Shiga Prefecture is home to Lake Biwa, the largest lake in Japan, and the region's relationship with natural resources has shaped Daiyo's approach from the beginning - all candles are made from 100% natural plant wax, a principle unchanged in over a century of production.
