Only left in stock

Ceramic red teapot made in Tokoname, Aichi Prefecture - one of Japan’s Six Ancient Kiln sites. It is known as a yokode kyūsu (side-handle teapot) and features a removable lid and an integrated ceramic mesh filter that allows loose tea leaves to flow freely while keeping the pour clean. The surface colour is the warm red associated with traditional Tokonome ware, and gives a sense of natural elegance. Each lid is finished using the suriawase technique, where the pot and lid are finely rubbed together for a precise, seamless fit.

  • Colour: Red
  • Volume: 200 ml
  • Packaging: Cardboard box
  • Name stickers on the lid are removable

Care & Use

Before first use, rinse the teapot with warm water and allow it to dry completely. Tokoname teapots are made from unglazed or lightly glazed clay, so they should not be washed with soap or detergent, as the clay may absorb scent or residue. Simply rinse with warm water after each use and let it air-dry with the lid off. Avoid placing on direct heat or in a dishwasher. Over time, a fine patina will develop inside the pot as the clay absorbs the essence of the tea - this is considered part of its natural seasoning and enhances the flavour of future brews.

About Tokoname Ware

Tokoname, located along the Chita Peninsula in Aichi Prefecture, is Japan’s oldest continuous pottery centre, with kilns dating back to the late Heian period (12th century). Its fine red clay, high in iron oxide, gives Tokoname ware its distinctive hue and subtle metallic sheen. When used for teapots, this clay is said to react gently with the tannins in tea, softening bitterness and enriching the flavour. Tokoname’s kyūsu (teapots) are prized for their precision craftsmanship, lightweight balance, and understated beauty - a perfect expression of monozukuri, the Japanese "art, craft and science of making things".
