Join WAZA co-founder Botha Kruger for an evening slideshow and talk reflecting on Japan as a country that rewards craftsmanship and how to build travel around that.

Drawing on photographs and personal encounters over 22 years of Japan travel, Botha will showcase a visual record of places visited, craftspeople encountered, and everyday moments observed along the way. He will also focus on practical tips and tricks for anyone planning to visit Japan. The event takes place on First Thursdays and is intended as an informal and interactive session.

Complimentary green tea will be served and there will be ample time for questions and conversation about Japan during and after the slideshow.

While there will be some seating available, most attendees will be required to stand. WAZA Japan Store has limited capacity and therefore advance reservation is required.

  • Address: WAZA Japan Store, 201 Bree Street, Cape Town
  • Date: Thursday, 2 April 2026
  • Slideshow & Talk: 18:30 - 19:30

Street parking is available in the surrounding areas. Please note that, given the start of the Easter weekend the city will be busy on the First Thursday evening.

Host Profile

Botha Kruger is the co-founder of WAZA Japan, a business which is dedicated to sharing Japanese craftsmanship, culture and travel experiences with South African audiences.
Botha has travelled extensively across Japan for more than twenty-two years, building direct relationships with artisans, tea producers, small manufacturers and craft communities throughout the country. These relationships form the foundation of everything WAZA does.

The guiding principle behind WAZA's work is the Japanese concept of monozukuri - the art, science and craft of making things - and a commitment to a (s)low consumption model: selecting objects that are made in or inspired by Japan, designed with intention, crafted with skill, and built to last. This will form the background of the talk, on how to approach Japan as a visitor.
