Matcha Bowl - Seiji Chawan - Floral Band Celadon
A compact bowl thrown in the rounded wan-nari (椀形) profile, the wall rising from a small, crisply cut ring foot and turning out a little at the lip. The throwing rings, rokurome (轆轤目), are left standing on the outside, and the glaze thins across each ridge so the iron in the clay warms it to tan.
Below the rim runs a band of small stamped flowers, pressed into the clay while it was still soft. The technique is inka (印花), originally adapted from Korean celadon. The pattern is not painted, so is visible only where the glaze settles more deeply into each impression and turns a shade milkier.
The glaze is a soft green-grey, seiji (青磁), glossy and finely crazed, pooling in the throwing lines and drawing thin over the lip, where it leaves a fine russet edge. The foot is left bare and shows the clay itself, a dark chocolate brown, wheel-trimmed and slightly undercut.
The top diameter of 12cm makes it ideal for usucha (thin tea) and a personal small ceremony.
