Notebook - A5 - Tomoe River Paper
Tomoe River is for many fountain pen users the standard against which all other paper is measured. Developed originally by Tomoegawa Paper, it earned a global following for doing something that seemed impossible at the time: a paper so thin it weighs just 52g/m² (roughly half the thickness of ordinary copy paper) that does not bleed through, does not feather, and shows fountain pen inks at their most vivid and true.
When Tomoegawa ceased production, the paper world took notice. The trademark and production transferred to Sanzen Paper Manufacturing, and this notebook uses that new generation of Tomoe River: more uniform fibre distribution, improved smoothness, and better sizing - meaning even greater resistance to bleed-through and feathering than before. The white paper colour is deliberate: white gives the most faithful reproduction of ink colours, letting shading, sheen, and shimmer express themselves fully.
The dot grid in this notebook is also printed in a unique way. Sakae Technical Paper's patented New Sub Dot Grid technology prints each visible dot as a cluster of invisible micro-dots, creating space within the dot itself. This allows ink to absorb more evenly and reduces the surface repelling that causes pooling with wetter nibs. The practical result is cleaner edges, better absorption, and a writing surface that cooperates with ink rather than resisting it. The grid is printed in indigo - a deliberate choice that sits visibly enough to guide the hand without competing with the ink on the page.
The cover carries an ornate baroque-style border in silver on matte black - a design that references the European tradition of fine writing instruments, fitting for a paper that has become a prestige material among writers and correspondents worldwide.

Tomoe River paper is the benchmark choice for fountain pen writing - its exceptional thinness, near-zero bleed-through, and faithful ink colour reproduction make it the preferred paper of serious pen users worldwide. It performs equally well with ballpoints, gel pens, pencils, and water-based markers, though inks may take slightly longer to dry given the paper's smooth, low-absorbency surface. This notebook is equally suited to journalling, correspondence drafts, and everyday writing for those who prefer not to compromise on paper quality.

SAKAE TECHNICAL PAPER CO., LTD. (SAKAEテクニカルペーパー株式会社) is a Japanese paper specialist whose history stretches back to 1940, through successive company transitions that have kept it at the centre of Japan's fine paper industry. Since 2014, Sakae has produced and distributed Tomoe River notebooks, first using paper by the original manufacturer Tomoegawa, and continuing purchasing the paper from source after the brand transferred to Sanzen. Sakae holds the international design patent for the New Sub Dot Grid printing method - a technology that has meaningfully improved the performance of dot-ruled paper for ink-based writing instruments. Beyond Tomoe River, Sakae continues to develop specialist papers including Iroful, expanding the possibilities between paper and pen for writers worldwide.
