Pencil Sharpener - 5 Point Lengths - K'ZOOL

A compact hand sharpener that lets you choose how long the point will be, from a short, sturdy tip to a long, fine one.

Turning the ridged dial on the sharpener sets one of five stages, and a small window on the body shows the chosen setting as a pencil-point icon: the more lines in the icon, up to five, the longer and finer the resulting point. The blade itself is unchanged at every setting. What changes is how much wood is removed and how much lead is left standing.

A short setting gives a stubby, well-supported tip that resists snapping, which suits soft leads, coloured pencils, and children who write with a heavy hand. A long setting draws the lead out for drawing, shading and fine annotation, where a sustained point matters more than durability.

Lead broken off inside the hole is cleared by pressing the round PUSH button at the centre of the dial, without a pin or a shake. Shavings collect inside the body, and a sliding shutter closes the opening so nothing escapes into a pencil case or a bag.

This is from Kutsuwa's HiLiNE range of Japanese-made clear stationery. The body is moulded in uncoloured plastic, so the steel cutter and the shavings inside remain visible.
