Pencil Sharpener - 5-Stage Dial - T'GAAL
A pencil sharpener that offers the ability to sharpen a pencil at different angles with different point lengths.
The T'GAAL's dial changes the angle of the blade to create five different point lengths, from very short (1) to very long (5). The mechanism is elegant: turning the dial pivots the sharpener component within the casing, which changes the size of the entry hole and therefore controls how much wood is removed - yielding a shorter or longer point, but with the same sharpness at every setting. It is not a choice between sharp and less sharp, but rather to get the right point geometry for the pencil and its intended use.
Key features
- Dial 1–2 gives a sturdier, shorter tip with less breakage - this is ideal for soft leads, coloured pencils, and children's pencils.
- Dial 3–5 produces a progressively longer point, suited to harder graphite pencils where a fine, sustained tip is the priority.
- The integrated shavings chamber contains waste until you choose to empty it, and the CLOSE setting seals the entry hole completely, preventing shavings from escaping in a bag or pen case.
The T'GAAL won the Japan Good Design Award in 2004 in recognition of its unique design.
